TRC2 Region comprising the provinces of Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region covers 4.4 % of Turkey with its area of 34,540 km2 including the lakes.
According to the figures of the Address-based Birth Registration System (2010 Population Census), the population density of the region is 94 people per km2, which is lower than the nation-wide population density of 96 people / km2. While the population density of Şanlıurfa is lower than the regional density with 89 people per km2, Diyarbakır is above the regional value of density with 102 people / km2.
The annual population growth rate of the region is 20.12 ‰ according to the 2010 data. The population of the region is quite young and 59.9 % of the population is below the age of 25 based on the 2009 census data. People within the 25-65 age group constitute 36.4 % of the total population; while senior citizens aged 65 and older make up 3.7 % of the total population.
In 2010, the ratio of urban population to the total population is 63.05 %. While 2,012,711 people live in cities, 1,179,618 people reside in towns and villages.
Among those employed in 2010, 54.7 % work in services sector; 28.0 % and 17,2 % work in agriculture and industry sectors respectively. The unemployment rate of the region is 13,1 % for the same year, labor force participation rate is 33.5 %, non-agricultural unemployment rate is 14.5 % and employment rate is 29.1 %.
The agricultural land of the region is 1,753,830 hectares total. 1,623,926 hectares of this land is cultivated agricultural land and the remaining is perennial area (Turkish Statistical Institute [TSI], 2009).
According to the order of socio-economic development made based on Level 2es in the Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS) by the State Planning Organization (SPO), TRC2 Region (Diyarbakır-Şanlıurfa) ranks 23 among 26 regions. The development order of the region in terms of health sector is 23 and order of development for education is 25 (SPO, 2003).
TR1 Istanbul has the highest share in the regional gross value calculations in NUTS Level 2 for 2008 with 27.65 %. TRC2 Region in the NUTS Level 2 ordering ranks 17 with a share of 1.69%.
